FIN - Nature - Winter War monument Raatteen Portti

The Winter War Monument was erected in honour of the veterans of the Winter War 1939-1940 as well those others who were involved or who suffered. The monument is located along the side of the old Raate road, near Suomussalmi, Finland. The bloodiest battles of the war were fought in this area. <br> Stones standing on an area covering almost three hectares represent the number of soldiers who died in the Winter War battles of Suomussalmi. This stone field reminds us of the human suffering which the war brought.

The Silent People. The almost one thousand strong band that makes up the Silent People suddenly emerges before the passing motorist like some great stroke of magic. In the morning wih he light behind them, this motionless army appears morose, even menacing. However, as the day progress their countenance brightens up and with the setting of the sun, they present a distinctly jolly and colorful picture. <br> Finnish artist Reijo Kela unveiled his peat-headed beings for the first time in his 1988 presentation Ilmaris Ploughed  Field in Lassilas Field. They reappeared six years later in Helsinkis Senaatintori Market Place as part of the 1994 Kainuu Exhibition. Some 1200 Silent people had made journey down to Helsinki, but there was room for only 700 of them on the steps of the Cathedral. <br> The Silent People moved to their present home in autumn of 1994. he peat-heads are kept in good shape and have their clothing attended to twice a year. Their heads come straight from the field, their clothes come from organized collections. The Silent People are made and clothed by Suomussalmi Youth Workshop, which also takes care of their maintenance.





FIN - Nature - Finnish Lake District

Koli National Park is located in northern Karelia on the western shore of Lake Pielinen. Park is managed by Finnish Forest research Institute and it covers almost 3000 hectares. The parks purpose is to protect the national landscape o Koli and old growth forests on the foot hills, as well as to maintain plant communities created by slash-and-burn agriculture. <br> Kolis hills are the remnants of the ancient Karelidic mountain chain formed almost 2000 million years ago as continental plates collided, causing thick sandstone strata to become metamorphosed and folded. <br> Ukko-Koli, the highest point in the chain, and also in South Finland, rises 347m above sea level and 253m above Lake Pielinen. The scenery around Koli is considered to be some of the most beautiful in Finland.

Kerimaki wooden church is located in Kerimaki, Finland. Kerimaki wooden church is, with its 45 meters in length, 42 meters width and 27 meters height (height of dome is 37 meters), Worlds largest wooden church. Church, which construction finished in 25th of September 1847, was consecrated June 11th 1848. <br> There are altogether 1670 meters of pews and it can accommodate over 3000 seating parishioners. Including standing room, he church can accommodate as many as 5000 people.  <br> The Rev. Fredrik Neovius, who held office in the 1840s, was of the opinion that half of the people  o the parish should be able to meet for religious worship at the same time. Festival days and market days also had an influence on he scale of the church. Big gatherings were part of the everyday life and it was only natural to meet for worship on market days. The original idea was to gather all the people to worship at the same time.

The buildings in Old Porvoo were built according to mediaeval town plan and are of historic value in terms of their construction. Whole city is dominated by Porvoo Cathedral built on top hill above Old Porvoo.

Beach chairs are abandoned in windy summer evening on sandy beaches of North Germanys tourist resort Warnemunde. Temperatures around +18 degres of Celsius and strong wind made bathers to leave early, and wind had its own way to play with sand and beach equipment on endless Baltic sandy beaches.
